An app icon is a square that several operating systems will crop
The file you design is not the file people see. Apple rounds it. Android launchers use circles, squircles, and other masks that differ by phone. A maskable PWA icon is cropped to a circle. Google Play also wants a separate listing image. If the idea sits in the corners, the shipped icon is a different design from the one you approved.
Start from a 1024 × 1024 master with the symbol inside a safe center. Stores and launchers scale down from that master. A 512 listing icon, a home-screen size, and a 16-pixel shortcut are exports, not separate illustrations, as long as the original shape was simple enough.

Put the idea in the middle
Leave a margin. Rounded corners, circular masks, and the Android safe zone all eat the edges. A symbol that touches the border will be clipped on at least one platform.

Full-bleed background
Transparent corners often read as a pre-rounded icon. The platform then applies its own mask and you get a double crop. Fill the square. Let the OS shape it.

Almost no text
A single letter can work. A word does not. At home-screen size the letters become texture, and the mask may cut the last character off entirely.

Judge it small, on both wallpapers
Look at the tile at the size of an actual home screen, on a light wallpaper and a dark one. A mark that only works on the white artboard is not finished.

Google Play listing icon
A 512 × 512 PNG, 32-bit, at or under 1024 KB. It is the image on the store page, and it is not the same slot as the Android launcher layers.
Android adaptive icon
Foreground and background are separate layers. A flat PNG can be previewed, but a real adaptive icon needs the artwork kept inside the inner safe circle.
Small sizes
Home screen, shortcuts, and notification-scale reductions. If the 48-pixel version is mud, simplify the master. Do not add a drop shadow to hide it.

What size should my app icon be?
Start from a 1024×1024 master. Stores and OS toolkits downscale from there into the sizes each platform needs.
Will my icon survive iOS and Android masks?
Yes — keep critical shapes inside the safe zone. IconCreator previews favor clear centers so rounded and squircle masks still read.
Can I use the same mark as my logo?
