Adaptive icon versus Google Play icon

Your Android launcher icon and Google Play listing icon are separate assets. The adaptive icon is packaged with the Android app. The Play Store listing icon is a separate 512 × 512, 32-bit PNG with an sRGB color space and a maximum file size of 1024 KB. Google Play applies its own mask and shadow.

Adaptive icon layers

Android adaptive icons use a 108 × 108 dp canvas. Keep critical artwork inside the inner 66 × 66 dp safe zone. The outer 18 dp on each side may be cropped by launcher masks or used for effects such as parallax.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Upload layers

Add a transparent foreground, choose a solid/gradient/image background, and optionally create a monochrome layer.

  2. Step 2

    Preview masks and motion

See circle, squircle, rounded square, square and teardrop crops with safe-zone overlays.

  3. Step 3

    Review readiness

Required fixes stay separate from recommended guidance and visual estimates.

  4. Step 4

    Export the Android package

Download drawable layers, adaptive XML, density mipmaps and a manifest snippet.

Common adaptive icon problems

Android adaptive icon cropped

Launcher masks clip the outer portion of the 108 dp canvas. Scale the foreground so the symbol stays inside the 66 dp safe zone.

Android icon safe zone

The guaranteed visible area is a centered 66 × 66 dp region. Critical logo parts should not rely on the outer 18 dp bleed.

Android icon foreground too large

If the main mark exceeds roughly 66 dp, circle and teardrop masks will crop it. Use Fit safely across all masks to scale down.

Android icon transparent background

The background layer should be full-bleed. Transparency in the background can produce unexpected holes under launcher masks.

Android themed icon not working

Themed icons on Android 13+ need a monochrome layer referenced from the adaptive-icon XML. Generate a silhouette or upload a dedicated mono asset.

How to create a monochrome Android icon

Provide a single-color transparent silhouette. You can reuse foreground alpha, convert the foreground to a silhouette, or upload a separate mono PNG.

Android adaptive icon foreground and background

Foreground holds the symbol (usually with alpha). Background is a solid color, gradient or full-bleed image. Both live on a 108 dp canvas.

Android launcher icon versus Google Play icon

Launcher icons are adaptive layers inside the APK. The Play listing icon is a separate 512 × 512 PNG under 1024 KB.

Android adaptive icon XML example

Place an adaptive-icon XML under mipmap-anydpi-v26 that references drawable background, foreground and optional monochrome resources.

Android app icon different shapes

OEMs use circle, squircle, rounded square, teardrop and other masks. Preview every shape before shipping.

Your icon layers stay private

Layer analysis, previews and ZIP export run locally in your browser. Artwork is not uploaded to IconCreator servers, stored in an account or used to train image-generation models.

How adaptive icon requirements are verified

  • Required

Objective resource needs such as existing square layers that can fill the 108 dp canvas.

  • Recommended

Official or practical guidance such as keeping artwork inside the 66 dp safe zone.

  • Automated estimate

Browser-side analysis of padding, contrast, crop risk and monochrome detail loss.

  • Manual review

Trademark, manifest wiring, OEM quirks and Play approval cannot be confirmed from pixels alone.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Android Adaptive Icon Checker free?+

Yes. Preview, adjust and export adaptive icon resources in your browser with no signup. IconCreator CTAs appear only when the artwork needs a redesign.

Are my icon layers uploaded?+

No. Processing stays on your device. Files are not uploaded, stored or used for training.

What size should adaptive icon layers be?+

Design against a 108 × 108 dp canvas. Keep important artwork inside the centered 66 × 66 dp safe zone. This tool exports master PNGs at 432 × 432 px (xxxhdpi) plus density fallbacks.

Do I need a monochrome layer?+

Recommended for Android 13+ themed icons. Without it, launchers may not apply wallpaper-derived theming to your app icon.

Is the Google Play listing icon included?+

No. Play uses a separate 512 × 512 PNG. Use the Google Play Icon Checker / export path for that asset.

Does the motion preview match every launcher?+

No. Motion is labeled as a launcher behavior simulation to show why separate layers matter. It does not reproduce every OEM animation.

What does the export ZIP contain?+

Drawable foreground/background/monochrome resources, mipmap-anydpi-v26 adaptive XML, legacy mipmap densities, a manifest snippet and a README.
