An app needs a word people can read and a tile they can tap
The marketing site has room for the full name. The App Store title has some room. The home screen has almost none: a square, masked, sitting next to twenty other squares. Treating those as one image means either a wordmark nobody can read on the phone, or an icon with no name anywhere else.
Make both from the same idea. The wordmark is the header, the store subtitle area, and the deck. The tile is one shape taken from that logo, padded so the mask does not cut it, and checked at home-screen size. When they share a style and a silhouette, the site and the phone look like the same product.
IconCreator can run the logo and the icon from one brief. The previewer is already live if you want to see a tile on a phone before the generator opens.
- 01
Header first
Set the name. That is what people search for and what the site has to carry. A symbol with no readable name forces every ad to explain who you are.
- 02
Then remove the letters
The store icon should be recognizable as part of the same brand with the word gone. If you have to invent a new metaphor for the tile, the logo was not simple enough.
- 03
Preview on a crowded screen
A tile on a white artboard always looks cleaner than a tile beside Maps, Messages, and a dark wallpaper. The previewer shows that context.
- 04
Keep the store name and the icon in agreement
The icon does not have to spell the name. It does have to feel like the product the title describes. A playful tile on a severe wordmark reads as two apps.
Two assets
What to design, in order
Skip ahead to the phone only after the name works.
Wordmark
Site header, deck, and anywhere the product is introduced in a sentence. One color, readable when small.
Square glyph
The home-screen and store icon. Centered, padded, no sentence of text. 1024 master.
Listing preview
Look at the icon next to the app name on a store-style layout. The pair should feel planned.
In-product mark
The same glyph, smaller, in a nav bar or empty state. If it turns to mud there, simplify before you ship the store version.
App logo questions
Do apps need both a logo and an icon?
Usually yes. Marketing uses a wordmark; stores and home screens need a square glyph.
Can one AI run cover both?
Start from the same brief and style, then generate logo-first and icon-first directions so they feel related.
What about SaaS vs mobile apps?
The workflow is the same — prioritize clarity in headers and at small UI sizes.
Which export should I use in the App Store?
Use a high-resolution PNG master (typically 1024×1024) derived from your icon direction.
