How do I convert PNG to ICO?+

What sizes should a favicon.ico have?+
16×16, 32×32 and 48×48 cover browser tabs, bookmarks and Windows shortcuts. Add 64 for very sharp screens.
Can I just rename a PNG to .ico?+
No. An ICO is a container with its own header. A renamed PNG may work in some browsers and fail in others.
Does the ICO keep transparency?+
Yes. Each size is stored as a 32-bit PNG inside the ICO, so transparent areas stay transparent.
Can I convert SVG or JPG to ICO?+
Yes. SVG, JPG, WebP and GIF all work. JPG has no transparency, so its background stays.
Where do I put favicon.ico?+
At the root of your site (example.com/favicon.ico), plus <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="any"> in your HTML head.
