How to make an app icon that still works on a phone
The order matters more than the tool. Write what the icon is, draw it big and simple, pull the art away from the edges, then look at it small on a light wallpaper and a dark one. Teams skip the last two steps, approve a large preview, and discover the problem after the store listing is up.
You can do the drawing by hand, in Figma, or with a generator. IconCreator’s app icon lane is for the middle step: a set of simple squares from a one-line brief. The checks at the end are the same either way, and the checker on this site runs them on a file you upload.
Below is the sequence with the decisions inside each step. The FAQ answers the usual edge cases, including why a full word on the icon fails.
- 01
Write one line
Product name, who it is for, and the single object or letter. “Field notes for hikers, a folded map” is enough. If the line has three objects, cut it before you draw. The icon cannot explain the product. The store description does that.
- 02
Draw it at 1024
One shape, strong contrast, a full-bleed background, no sentence of text. Work in vector if you can. If you use AI, reject any result that looks like a poster, a screenshot, or a mockup of a phone.
- 03
Pull the art inward
Move the symbol toward the center until a circular crop and a rounded-square crop both keep it intact. Android adaptive icons and maskable PWAs are stricter than a simple rounded rectangle. The safe center is the area you are allowed to care about.
- 04
Look at it small
Export a home-screen size and a 48-pixel size. Put them on light and dark wallpapers, next to other apps if you can. If you cannot tell what it is, simplify the master and repeat this step. Do not fix a muddy icon by adding a shadow.
Failures
What usually goes wrong
Each of these looks fine in a large preview.
Text
The app name spelled across the icon. It becomes noise, and the mask cuts it off.
Transparent corners
A pre-rounded PNG. The platform rounds it again. Fill the square.
Tiny detail
Eyes, labels, textures, and thin highlights that only exist at 1024. They shimmer or vanish when scaled.
A unique file per size
Redrawing 180, 512, and 1024 separately makes them drift. One master, then exports.
How-to questions
What is the first step to make an app icon?
Write a one-line brief: product name, audience, and the feeling you want at a glance.
How do I avoid blurry store icons?
Design at 1024×1024 (or vector), keep shapes bold, and avoid hairline details that vanish when downscaled.
Should text go on the icon?
Usually no. Short lettermarks can work; full words rarely survive small sizes and masks.
Can AI handle the whole process?
AI can explore directions quickly. You still choose the winner and verify contrast on light and dark wallpapers.
Where do I generate after reading this?
In the app icon studio. Your first creation is free, and the checker and resizer work on a file you upload.
