iOS App Icon Sizes (Xcode 26, iOS 26)
Short answer
You need one 1024×1024 PNG. Xcode builds every iPhone and iPad size from it, and it's also the App Store icon. Fill the whole square with no transparency and no rounded corners. For iOS 26 Liquid Glass icons, use an Icon Composer file instead.
Checked against Apple: Configuring your app icon, Apple HIG: App icons and Apple: Icon Composer in October 2026.

Add the icon in Xcode
- 01Open
Assets.xcassetsand select AppIcon. - 02In the Attributes inspector, set iOS to Single Size.
- 03Drag your 1024×1024 PNG into the image well.
- 04For dark and tinted icons, choose Any, Dark, Tinted in the Appearance menu and add each one.
- 05Check General → App Icons and Launch Screen → App Icons Source says
AppIcon.
| Variant | How to make it |
|---|---|
| Any (light) | Full square, opaque background |
| Dark | Transparent background; the system draws the dark background |
| Tinted | Grayscale image; the system adds the tint |
Icon Composer (Liquid Glass)
Icon Composer builds one layered .icon file for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch, with the default, dark, clear and tinted looks inside it. Open it from Xcode → Open Developer Tool → Icon Composer.
- 01Export your layers: an opaque, full-bleed background and one or more foreground layers.
- 02Build the icon in Icon Composer and save it as
AppIcon.icon. - 03Drag the file into the Project navigator.
- 04In General → App Icons and Launch Screen, make the App Icon name match the file name without
.icon.
An Icon Composer file replaces the AppIcon asset catalog in current Xcode.
iOS app icon errors and fixes
| You see | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| ITMS-90704: Missing app icon / marketing icon | No 1024×1024 PNG in the AppIcon set | Add a 1024×1024 PNG to AppIcon (Single Size) |
| ITMS-90717: Invalid App Store icon | The 1024 icon has transparency or an alpha channel | Re-export without alpha on a solid background |
| Icon blank or the old one on device | Wrong icon set selected, or a cached install | Check App Icons Source in General, delete the app, rebuild |
| Rounded corners look doubled | The PNG has its own rounded corners | Use a full square; iOS applies the mask |
| Dark mode icon looks wrong | The dark variant has a solid background | Give the dark icon a transparent background |
FAQ
What size is an iOS app icon?
1024×1024 pixels. Xcode makes every smaller size from that one image.
Does the App Store icon need to be 1024×1024?
Yes. It's the same 1024 image as the AppIcon set, with no transparency.
Should I round the corners?
No. Give a full square. iOS applies the rounded mask.
Can the icon be transparent?
Not the default icon. Only the dark variant should have a transparent background.
What's the 180×180 icon?
The iPhone home screen size at @3x. Xcode makes it for you from the 1024.
